Little Tokyo Is Open: Suehiro Fireside Chat Filming

Little Tokyo Is Open is a journalistic series of videos and articles highlighting the small businesses and community members who make Los Angeles' Little Tokyo such a distinctive cultural enclave. For this installment, we produced a three-camera fireside conversation at Suehiro, an izakaya-style restaurant with deep roots in the neighborhood.

The hour-long conversation brought together Suehiro's owner and an LA-Times journalist with expertise in dining and Japan. Filming inside Suehiro placed the conversation within the environment being discussed, giving viewers a stronger connection to the restaurant and its place within the neighborhood. Our production was designed to remain compact and unobtrusive, creating a comfortable setting where the participants could concentrate on speaking with one another rather than performing for the cameras.

Unlike some of our live-to-tape productions, this conversation was recorded independently on each camera rather than switched during filming. That decision provided greater flexibility during post-production while still maintaining an accelerated delivery schedule. Following the shoot, the cameras were synchronized and the conversation was assembled as a multi-camera edit in DaVinci Resolve, with the first cut delivered less than 24 hours after filming.

Rapid turnaround can be particularly valuable for journalistic and community-focused content. Stories often have greater relevance when they can be published while the surrounding conversation is still current. Building an efficient workflow from production through post allows long-form material to move quickly without requiring the production itself to become intrusive or unnecessarily complicated.
