Ventura County Fire Department - Fire Fighter Graduation Ceremony

We partnered with the Ventura County Fire Department to provide multi-camera live production for its annual firefighter graduation ceremony. The event marks the transition from trainee to firefighter and brings together graduates, department leadership, families, and members of the community to recognize the achievement.

Our production combines traditional multi-camera coverage with two fully wireless roaming cameras, allowing operators to move freely throughout the ceremony without being tethered to a fixed position. This gives the production the flexibility to capture both the formal proceedings and the more personal moments surrounding them. Aerial coverage from a drone adds another perspective, establishing the scale and setting of the ceremony in a way that ground-based cameras cannot.

The program is produced simultaneously as both a live stream and a live-to-tape edit. Families and community members who are unable to attend can watch the ceremony as it happens, while the live-switched program creates an immediate edited record of the event which can then be edited and uploaded as a full program. This approach dramatically reduces the amount of post-production required afterward while preserving a polished version of an important milestone for the department and its graduates.

Producing a live broadcast in the field presents a different technical challenge from working inside a traditional venue. There is no production infrastructure waiting when the crew arrives. Cameras, switching equipment, audio systems, communications, monitoring, power, and connectivity all have to be brought to the location and built specifically for the event.

Reliable internet access is particularly critical. Because the graduation takes place in a field environment without conventional wired connectivity, our team establishes an independent internet connection using Starlink satellite service. Building both power and connectivity into the production plan allows the broadcast to operate independently of venue infrastructure and makes professional live streaming possible in locations where it might otherwise be impractical.

The technical complexity, however, should remain largely invisible to the audience. The purpose of the production is not to showcase the equipment required to make the broadcast possible, but to ensure viewers at home can share the experience with the people gathered on site. Every production decision ultimately serves that goal.
