Star Trek Fleet Command: Fireside Chat
For this project, we partnered with Talking Trek, the Star Trek Fleet Command podcast, to produce a two-hour fireside conversation between the show's hosts and the General Manager of Star Trek Fleet Command. Our responsibilities covered the production from beginning to end, including sourcing the location and equipment, designing the technical workflow, capturing the conversation live-to-tape, completing post-production, and delivering the finished program in 4K.
For an established community like Star Trek Fleet Command, these longer conversations can provide considerably more depth than a conventional interview. The participants have time to explain decisions, provide context, explore the state of the game, and address topics that matter to experienced players.
Our role was to create the technical structure that allowed that conversation to happen naturally.
A live-to-tape workflow was particularly valuable for a program of this length. Rather than approaching two hours of material as a conventional multi-camera shoot that would need to be assembled entirely in post-production, camera selections were made as the conversation unfolded. This created a strong working edit during production while preserving the ability to refine the program afterward.
Speed was also an important consideration. Much of the information discussed was time sensitive, meaning a lengthy post-production schedule could diminish the value of the conversation before it reached the audience. Producing the program live-to-tape significantly shortened the path between recording and final 4K delivery while still allowing for professional finishing and quality control.
This kind of long-form production occupies an important space between a traditional podcast, a corporate interview, and a live broadcast. It provides the technical polish of professional multi-camera production without sacrificing the informality that makes a genuine conversation compelling.
